-The maneki-neko is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman) which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. It is sometimes also called the welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, raging cat, beckoning cat, fortune cat in English, or “Chinese lucky cat”.
On this artwork, I wanted to express irony. Instead of giving good luck, the Maneki-neko is menacing a village. I also like to showcase the background behind this ornament by fusing Japanese and Chinese element in the artwork.
I’m pretty satisfied of how the artwork turns out to be. Compared to my other projects, I added more time in making it come to life. Although it is time consuming, I still had fun working on it.
For my process, I did a brief research behind the background regarding this ornament. It fascinates me that is why I want to be on point with this one. I guess my curiosity directs me where to start and how to finish.
I also made separate elements in my designs so it will be convenient when I start laying it out and resizing each one.
It is 100% vector. I sketched using Adobe Sketch then transferred all my designs in Adobe Draw in ipad and laid everything out in mac using Adobe Illustrator.
Like the art? It will be available soon in my online shop and art bazaar in LA. Just keep an eye to my announcements.
